Mourinho spoke to Lyon about a possible summer swoop for goal machine Alexandre Lacazette, according to reports.
Lacazette, 24, was arguably the most in-form striker in Europe last season, firing his club back into the Champions League with 27 goals in 33 games.
He has since struggled to replicate that form, though, scoring just once this season.
Mourinho held talks with Lyon about the possibility of signing the talented French forward over the summer.
However, both the player and Lyon were reluctant to sanction the move. The report continues by suggesting Lacazette wanted to stay in Ligue 1 this term ahead of Euro 2016, which is hosted in France next summer.
Meanwhile, Monaco striker Radamel Falcao has since arrived at Stamford Bridge, but one of the main criticisms of Chelsea in the summer was a continued lack of support for Diego Costa.
The Brazilian-born Spain international scored 20 goals last term, helping the club to a fourth Premier League title, but he has only found the net once this term, with Chelsea winning just two of their opening six games.
