Juan Mata has been named in the BBC’s Premier League Team of the Week by Garth Crooks after his performance against Sunderland.
The Spanish midfielder was instrumental in the 3-0 win with a goal and an assist and has continued his fine run of recent form which has made him indispensable in Manchester United’s starting XI.
There were plenty of questions asked about Mata playing on the right-wing as his natural position is more central but he has excelled out on the flank this season.
Like Memphis Depay and Luke Shaw had on the left before his injury, Mata is building a strong partnership with Matteo Darmian on the right and their influence has certainly been a contributing factor in United’s rise to the top of the Premier League.
No midfielder has scored more outfield goals in the Premier League than Mata since he joined United back in January 2014 and that’s a testament to how well he’s done at the club. Right now, his style of football is a perfect marriage for how United are playing and we’re reaping the rewards because of it.
Mata’s performances have gone under the radar for a large period of his Old Trafford career but he’s now rising to the top and becoming one of Louis van Gaal‘s most important players. Heading into tough games against Wolfsburg and Arsenal, fans are hoping he can continue with the sort of form which has earned him a place in the BBC Team of the Week.
