Chelsea have grown very wary of their goal-keeping situation and are set to sign former AC Milan goal keeper Marco Amelia on a free transfer. According to the reliable source TMW, Amelia is set to arrive at Stamford Bridge later today and will sign for the club in next 24 hours.
Amelia has previously played for AC Milan and was also a part of Italy’s World Cup winning squad in 2006. For now, it has been confirmed that Chelsea will sign Amelia on a short-term basis to cover the gap until Thibaut Courtois does not come back from his foot injury.
Asmir Begovic was signed as a cover for Courtois but he has been involved in games where Chelsea have shipped numerous goals and the most recent was the game against FC Porto where Chelsea were beaten 2-1. Begovic’s ability to cope up at the highest level has worried Jose Mourinho and is now looking for other options.
Chelsea have registered 19 players over the age of 25 in their Premier League squad including 5 home-grown players. This has allowed them to sign a free agent and with Amelio being out of contract currently, he is seen as the best option Chelsea can go for.
It may be a panic buy considering the situation at Stamford Bridge but one cannot ignore the necessity of this transfer as Begovic is struggling and Courtois is out injured. Chelsea need to quickly turn around their season as they are 14th in the League standings and have failed to win games in recent times.
