Barcelona sporting director: Martial is a great prospect

New Manchester United signing Anthony Martial is a great prospect whose fee can be justified by his huge potential according to Barcelona sporting director Robert Fernandez, via Mundo Deportivo.

Martial moved to United on deadline day for a fee believed to be around £36 million (via BBC Sport) in a move that sent shockwaves across Europe because he is still just 19.

There can be denying that right now it seems as if Monaco have got the better end of the deal but Martial has immense potential and he may well go on to justify that fee.

Fernandez said that he believes the Frenchman is a very talented player and although he accepted United have paid a lot for him he does have a lot of potential.

“He is [a] great prospect for the future. He broke through last season and is a very good player,” Fernandez said.

“United have paid a lot of money to get him but if a club pay that… he has a huge potential for progression. But I’d rather not talk about players from other clubs.”

Martial has taken the number nine shirt at United and it is going to be interesting to see whether or not he is thrown straight into the first team.

The more likely scenario is that he will be eased in gradually but captain Wayne Rooney is yet to score a goal in the Premier League this season despite a hat-trick against Club Brugge.

Martial can also play on the wings and his pace will certainly make him a threat in that position.
